ART 351: Furniture Design And Making
Role: Furniture Designer
Duration: June ~ August 2018, 3 months
Design Process
Requirement
Modify a case study of a multi-purpose bench.
Concept Ideation and Critiques
My initial idea is to add a back and leg support to the bench to make it more comfortable to sit. I drew down some sketches to demonstrate my concepts and presented them for the in-class critique. From the feedback that I got back, there is a suggestion that I should remove the leg support because the width of the leg support will be too short of supporting the user’s leg, and it will become a waste of material. After several back and forth discussions, I decided to modify the bench to have back support.
Full-Scale Drawings
I drew down several full-scale drawings to see how the bench will fit. It also helped me to think about the materials I need and their dimension. These pieces of information are essential for me to assemble this bench because they helped me to prepare beforehand so that I don’t have to worry about missing materials or dimensions are not correct when I am building this bench.
Assembly
After I finished the full-scale drawings and presented them to the second class critique to received feedback and make sure everything is good to go, I went into woodshop to assemble the bench. With the help of the technician in the woodshop, I was able to build my bench.

Thoughts and Reflections
From this project, I learned how preparing beforehand is so helpful in my assembly phase. Without planning, I might not know what the best approach is, and I might run into some technical difficulties. Without full-scale drawings, the furniture might not be the size that I wanted. The skills that I learned from this project really help me to grow as a designer, and they will become essential processes every time I design something.
